BOTOX® FAQs

What is BOTOX®?

Similar to Dysport, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription neurotoxin that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows and crow’s feet in adults.

The cosmetic procedure is non-invasive and can be performed in minutes to start feeling and looking younger.

This procedure is popular with celebrities and public figures who want to reduce the appearance of aging.

How does BOTOX® work?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is an injectable prescription neurotoxin that targets one of the causes of frown lines and crow’s feet.

Crows feet are created from the constant muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years.

Dr. Gertzman will inject these muscles with BOTOX® Cosmetic to temporarily reduce muscle activity.

How Long does BOTOX® Last?

BOTOX® can last 3-5 months.

You may start to notice the effect of your injection 3-5 days after your treatment.

In some cases, the full results become visible after 2 weeks.

Will BOTOX® make me look like I’ve had work done?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a technique-sensitive treatment so you’ll want to use a doctor you can trust.

You should not lose the ability to show expression when you are treated by someone who is licensed, trained, and a medical expert in facial anatomy like Dr. Gertzman.

It is important to talk to Dr. Gertzman about the results you want from treatment before getting started.  This can be discussed in your free, 15-minute consultation.

Dr. Gertzman has even published a book physicians reference when learning how to inject BOTOX®.

That’s right — she literally wrote the book on how to get great BOTOX® results!

Does BOTOX® treatment hurt?

Some patients report that being injected with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a sting.

Because BOTOX® is a series of small injections, some patients who are pain sensitive may feel more of a sting.

These injections, however, only last seconds.

Dr. Gertzman will use ice to numb the area and make you feel more comfortable during the process.

The best part is there is no lingering pain and virtually no downtime.

It is just recommended not to lay down for 4 hours after your treatment.

Dr. Gertzman will make sure you are completely aware of any preparations before or after the treatment.

How long does the treatment take?

The actual injection process takes just a few minutes!

Dr. Gertzman will discuss your treatment goals and perform a facial examination to determine the appropriate number of units for you.

Some patients require more or less than others.

BOTOX® vs Dysport and other Injectables

Dysport is marketed by the same company that makes Restylane.

Both of these treatments are very similar and reduce wrinkles and frown lines.

Dysport may not last as long as BOTOX® and you may need more Dysport to get the same results.

BOTOX® is still the most commonly known injectable, but Dysport is one of many on the market.

If you’re interested in an alternative to BOTOX®, let us know which you’d like to hear more about in your free consultation.

BOTOX® vs other dermal fillers

Dermal fillers, a service Serenity Medical Spa offers, are injected to add volume and fullness.

Patients will use fillers to plump up or enhance areas of their body.

They can also be used to hide scars.

BOTOX® is known to paralyze (or freeze) areas that show wrinkles caused by facial expressions.

Generally, this means in the upper face or forehead.

While both treatments are designed to reduce the appearance of your age, BOTOX® focuses on freezing muscles while fillers focus on filling in areas that have lost volume.

Sometimes the two can be combined into one treatment.  Be sure to ask about this during your free consultation.

 When will I see results?

You may notice results within 7 to 10 days for moderate to severe frown lines

Results last up to 3-5 months.

How many injections will I receive?

Because each area is different, it can take anywhere from 6-12 injections.

Crow’s feet require 6 (3 for each side), and about 6 injections each for the forehead and between the eyebrows.

How long is the recovery time after BOTOX®?

There is minimal downtime with this treatment.

We do advise patients not to lie down or look down for 4-6 hours after BOTOX® to avoid any drooping.

Is BOTOX® Safe?

BOTOX® is a neurotoxin that is known for causing botulism, essentially paralyzing muscles.

For this reason, a lot of people think that it is unsafe, but it was FDA approved back in 2002.

BOTOX® has a very safe history with the main adverse effects coming from mixes with underlying medical conditions.

For this reason, you should always make sure to speak to Dr. Gertzman before starting any procedure.

She will advise the best course of action for you.

What the side effects of BOTOX®?

Side effects from BOTOX® injections are rare.

Most commonly, patients have experienced eyelid drooping and swelling.

Other possible side effects include:

  • dry mouth
  • discomfort or pain at the injection site
  • tiredness
  • headache
  • neck pain
  • eye problems
  • double vision
