Injectables Q & A

What’s the difference between neurotoxins and fillers?

Neurotoxins are injectable treatments for dynamic wrinkles, the ones that appear due to muscle movement. Neurotoxins generally treat wrinkles in three places:

  • Vertical between-brow lines
  • Horizontal above-brows lines
  • Crow's feet in the eye area

Fillers are injectable treatments for static wrinkles, the ones that develop because of the gradual loss of collagen and elastin over time. Dermal fillers add volume in the following areas:

  • The lips
  • The nasolabial folds, which are the two vertical folds next to the nose and mouth
  • The upper cheeks
  • Marionette lines, the vertical lines on either side of the mouth down to the chin

Dermal filler longevity varies widely based on the type of filler and where it's injected.

What are my options for neurotoxin treatment?

Serenity Medical Spa offers three neurotoxin treatments:

  • Botox
  • Dysport®
  • Xeomin®

All of these neurotoxins have the same ingredient: botulinum toxin A. However, there are minor differences among them. Xeomin contains only botulinum toxin A, while Botox and Dysport both have additives.

In some rare cases, patients grow resistant to Botox or Dysport over time because they start producing antibodies to the additives. In these cases, Xeomin can still work because it's pure.

Another difference is how long the neurotoxin takes to go into effect. Dysport takes as little as two to three days. Botox takes as little as 24-48 hours, but can also take as long as a week. Xeomin usually takes the longest to go into effect at a minimum of three to four days. All three of these neurotoxin injectables last three to four months on average.

What are my options for filler treatment?

Serenity Medical Spa offers a range of fillers to meet all your volume and plumping needs. Options include:

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid fillers contain synthetic hyaluronic acid, just like what your body makes on its own. Options include:

  • Restylane: for facial volume anywhere, lasts around six months
  • Restylane Silk™: for lip lines and subtle volume, lasts around six months
  • Restylane Lyft™: for nasolabial folds, marionette lines, cheeks, lasts up to 18 months
  • Juvéderm® Voluma XC: for mid-face volume, lasts up to two years

Calcium microspheres

Radiesse® contains calcium-based microspheres that add volume and also trigger your body to make new collagen for ongoing skin support. Radiesse adds volume to the mid-face area, but can't go in your lips. It lasts for around a year.

Poly-L-lactic acid

Sculptra™ has poly-L-lactic acid that takes effect over time. Sculptra can add volume to your middle face, but it isn’t for use in your lips. It lasts for up to two years.
