Incorporating Injectables Into Your Regular Beauty Routine

Anti-aging treatments like injectables and fillers are continuing to gain popularity, thanks to their noninvasive nature, low incidence of side effects, and visible aesthetic results. Injectables could become a part of your regular beauty routine.

Sharon Gertzman, DO, and the aesthetics team at Serenity Medical Spa in Pennington, New Jersey, can go over which injectables are suitable for your specific needs and detail what they can do for you and your appearance.

Neurotoxin Injectables

There's a difference between neurotoxins and dermal fillers. Neurotoxin injectables include well-known treatments like Botox®, and they work best on dynamic wrinkles.

These wrinkles include the horizontal lines on your forehead, crow's feet, and the small, vertical wrinkles between your brows. The neurotoxin paralyzes and relaxes the muscles in these places, giving you a smoother, relaxed appearance without a “frozen” look and can last anywhere from 4-12 months.

There are three types of injectable neurotoxin treatments, all of which contain botulinum toxin A. This is a certified safe, purified form of a toxin produced by Clostridium botulinum. These three treatments include:

These vary among one another, but they all perform the same purpose. Botox and Dysport contain additives to boost efficacy, while Xeomin is the “naked” form of this treatment, with no additives. Dr. Gertzman can help you determine which of these is best for you.

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers

Dermal fillers work in a different way than neurotoxins. Where treatments like Botox freeze muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles, fillers replace the collagen and elastin you've lost. This adds volume to your lips, cheeks, mouth lines, and the folds next to your nose and mouth.

Serenity Medical Spa offers five different types of Restylane® fillers, including:

All of these treatments are made from hyaluronic acid (which your body naturally produces). The HA slowly absorbs into your system and is discarded as normal body waste, at which point you can return for another treatment to maintain your youthful look.

Other Injectable Fillers

There are two additional fillers available at Serenity Medical Spa:

Sculptra™

This is a poly-L-lactic acid that adds volume to your face. It takes some time to take effect, but it lasts up to two years. It cannot be used in the lips or the browline, only the middle of your middle face.

Radiesse®

This treatment consists of small calcium-based microspheres injected under the skin. They add volume, while stimulating the production of natural collagen. Like Sculptra, Radiesse can only be used in your middle face, not your lips or forehead.

Skilled injectable specialists like Dr. Gertzman can help you pinpoint the areas of your face that could use treatment and determine what treatment plan will help you get the effects you want.
